CARPENTER ANTS

Carpenter Ants live and build their nests both indoors and outdoors. You can find them nesting in old hollowed out and decaying moist wood like dead tree branches or old railroad ties. They carve out tunnels in the wood to travel to and from different sections of the nest. In the home they are most often found nesting in patio decks, porches, roof eaves and around wooden window and door structures. These areas are attractive to the carpenter ant because they are the most likely areas to contain moisture from the environment.

The Florida Carpenter Ant can damage the structural integrity of any wood they are nesting in. However Carpenter Ants do not eat the wood like termites do. They are not able to digest the wood so the wood shaving are discarded as they tunnel.

A carpenter ants diet consists of proteins and carbohydrates. Carpenter ants are nocturnal and you will find them foraging mostly at night. One of their food sources is honey dew. They find their honey dew in aphid colonies. Aphids secrete a honey dew substance and when the carpenter ants find this source of food they will actually protect the aphids from their natural enemies in order to insure the food source continues.
